Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It typically affects only one side of the body and is most commonly caused by a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis compressing part of the nerve. This compression leads to inflammation, pain, and often numbness or tingling in the affected leg. The pain can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or even excruciating discomfort, sometimes worsening with prolonged sitting, standing, or sudden movements like coughing or sneezing. Although sciatica can be very painful, it often resolves with conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and stretching exercises. In severe or persistent cases, medical interventions like steroid injections or surgery may be required. Maintaining proper posture, regular exercise, and avoiding heavy lifting can help prevent sciatica from recurring.
